Trieu Talks
I met Dora Trieu in my second year of college. She had a certain sort of confidence that I envied–she had that “I don’t give a s***” attitude, paired with a genuine down-to-earth personality I found charismatic. Fast-forward a couple years later, I ran into Dora randomly–she greeted me as if no time had passed at all, and chatted with me about life and school and everything in between. You’ve got to appreciate rare people like that. During the pandemic, I saw Dora on social media–this time rocking pink hair along with that same wild confidence. I thought, “Dora is a person with a lot of guts that I really look up to.” When I found out she had started a podcast, I took some time to listen to a few episodes. I found Trieu Talks to be so relatable and funny and down-to-earth. Just chats you’d love to have with a friend over tea or in a long car ride or while walking to class. Tell us about how you started Trieu Talks.
It was the height of the pandemic and most of my hobbies included being outside or with other people. I was talking on the phone/zooming with a lot of people and thought about how it would be fun to share those conversations with others and provide a nice casual conversation that makes the listener feel like they’re in the room with us.
What do you hope that listeners will walk away with?
A better understanding and increased empathy towards others.
Where can people listen to Trieu Talks?
On all platforms! Most popular ones are Apple podcasts and Spotify. If you google “Trieu Talks” it will pop up!
Are there any episodes or guests that left a sustained impact on you? Which one(s) and why?
03 - Gender is a Construct
This was was fun because we learned more about distinctions between sex, gender and attraction, and expression. I personally have come to terms with my sexuality within the past few years; the genderbread person helps me understand my attractions towards different genders and my self expression as a queer avian American woman.
05 - Reflections on Expectations within Asian Culture
This one hits the feels because dealing with the expectations within Asian culture has always been tough for me. Growing up with pressure to reach perfection is tough, and does some damage to you. Kristine is one of my best friends and it was great to chat with her about our thoughts on that.
What topics do you hope to cover in future episodes?
I want to cover more LGBT topics to provide a space that gears more towards the community and helps bring understanding to others as well.
Do you have a dream guest for the podcast?
Not particularly! I would love to have anyone that wants to be on the podcast :)
Anything else you’d like for readers to know about Trieu Talks?
It’s a very casual podcast. I generally don’t edit the recordings or have a script/layout of the questions that I ask. I find that when I do, the tone of the podcast doesn't have a natural feel to it. Given that there’s minimal edits/structure, sometimes it feels a bit chaotic so be prepared for that.
