Roots and Reflections
Growing up as Asian Americans, we often experience feelings of pride, shame, and confusion towards our blended identity at different points in our lives. As we mature and make peace with who we are, we might find that there are elements to our upbringing we hope to keep and those we might like to let go of with grace. It’s empowering to have multiple dimensions to our identity and to be able to exercise choice in our journey of defining who we are and who we would like to be. We want this issue to be an exploration of the integral pieces of our upbringing that we want to preserve and what we would like to make peace with leaving behind.

Healing
Humans have always searched for ways to heal the body and the mind—in fact, we still are constantly on the hunt with many active areas of research. In this issue, we want to explore some of the traditional and/or ancient methods of healing that we have been exposed to, especially as Asian Americans. Many of us can probably relate to something like “the strong-smelling herbs my mom cooked” or the “black syrup stuff my parents made me take” or other healing methods that may have been passed down to us from the generations before us. Or perhaps some of us have found clashing information from our Western medicinal counterparts. There are so many nuances between Western and Eastern healing that beg a conversation.

Fusion
Fusion can be such a beautiful thing and can really bring together the best of both worlds. The Asian American experience often gives birth to unique blends that marry together what we learn in the U.S. and what has been passed down from the generations before us. For example, many young chefs are exploring innovative fusions in the food scene. Or take the music scene, which is constantly evolving with borrowed elements that combine to make something new. In arts, science, media…our generation is creatively finding ways to incorporate various elements from the melting pot we grow up in to forge something novel and original.

Legends and Lore
Did your parents ever tell you not to whistle at night? Or to never sleep with your feet towards the door? We’ve probably heard all sorts of legends and stories that are deeply rooted across generations. In our final issue for 2025, we want to explore legends and lore in AAPI cultures. We learn so much Western lore in public education in the U.S.; we think it’s time we learn a bit about our own lore, too! No doubt there are unique stories and interesting characters out there!
